There are fewer than 1,100 mountain gorillas left in the wild, and over half of them live in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This 4-day expedition takes you deep into the ancient forest for an intimate encounter with one of our closest relatives.

The trek through dense tropical rainforest can take 1-6 hours depending on the gorilla group’s location. When you finally reach them, you’ll spend a magical hour observing silverbacks, mothers with babies, and playful juveniles going about their daily lives — an experience that regularly tops lists of the world’s greatest wildlife encounters.

Park entry is $40 per day for non-residents, with the gorilla tracking permit costing $800 (includes park entry on trek day). An extended Gorilla Habituation Experience ($1,500) allows 4 hours with a gorilla group being accustomed to human presence.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Kampala/Entebbe to Bwindi

Depart early morning for the scenic 8-10 hour drive through Uganda's lush countryside, crossing the equator and passing tea plantations. Alternatively, take a domestic flight to Kihihi airstrip (1 hr). Arrive at your lodge near Bwindi and receive a briefing on gorilla trekking etiquette.

2

Gorilla Trekking Day

Report to the park headquarters at 8 AM for a briefing by the UWA rangers. Groups of 8 visitors are assigned to a specific gorilla family. Trek into the dense forest with armed rangers and trackers who located the gorillas at dawn. The trek can take 1-6 hours through steep, muddy terrain. Spend one magical hour with the gorilla family — watching silverbacks feed, mothers nurse, and juveniles play. Return to the trailhead and transfer to your lodge.

3

Batwa Trail & Forest Walk

Morning Batwa Trail experience — learn about the indigenous Batwa people's traditional forest lifestyle, including hunting techniques, medicinal plants, and fire-making. Afternoon optional nature walk or community visit. Relax at the lodge and reflect on your gorilla encounter.

4
