Rwanda offers the most exclusive gorilla trekking experience in Africa. This 4-day journey in the Virunga Mountains combines gorilla trekking ($1,500 permit) with golden monkey tracking ($100) and a visit to the Dian Fossey Research Center — where decades of gorilla conservation history comes alive.

Rwanda’s compact size means short transfer times and more time with wildlife. From Kigali, the drive to Volcanoes National Park takes just 2.5 hours through stunning terraced hillsides that earned Rwanda its nickname — the Land of a Thousand Hills.

Additional activities include volcano hikes to Bisoke crater lake ($75), the challenging Karisimbi 2-day summit ($400), and cultural experiences with former poacher communities now working in conservation.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Arrive Kigali, Transfer to Volcanoes NP

Arrive at Kigali International Airport. Optional visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial — a powerful and important experience. Drive 2.5 hours north through terraced hills to your lodge near Volcanoes National Park.

Afternoon at leisure or visit a local community project.
