Overland Tours Across East Africa

Classic multi-day road safaris through iconic parks, from the Maasai Mara to the Serengeti and beyond

The Classic African Road Safari

There is a reason the overland safari remains the way most travellers fall in love with Africa. Rolling through the gates of the Maasai Mara at dawn, crossing the border into the Serengeti’s endless plains, watching the landscape change from savannah to crater highlands — an overland tour stitches the great parks of East Africa into one unforgettable journey.

Tour Africa runs overland tours from 3-day Kenyan highlights to 14-day multi-country expeditions across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda. Travel in rugged 4×4 Land Cruisers or pop-up roof safari vans with an experienced driver-guide who handles every border, park gate, and campsite along the way.

Popular Overland Routes

  • Kenya Classic (5–7 days) — Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru, and Amboseli: big cats, flamingos, and elephants beneath Kilimanjaro
  • Kenya & Tanzania Explorer (8–10 days) — The Mara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire in one seamless journey
  • Great Lakes Circuit (10–14 days) — Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth Park, Bwindi’s gorillas, and Rwanda’s volcanoes
  • Northern Kenya Frontier (6–8 days) — Samburu, Ol Pejeta, and Lake Turkana’s wild, rarely-visited landscapes

Travel days typically involve 4-6 hours on the road, broken up by game drives, scenic stops, and lunch. We design routes so that long transfers are followed by two or three-night stays, and much of the "driving" is actually game viewing inside the parks.

Not with us handling them. Your driver-guide manages the paperwork at crossings like Isebania and Namanga. Most travellers need an East Africa Tourist Visa or individual country visas, which we advise on at booking. The crossing itself usually takes under an hour.

Yes — group departures are ideal for solo travellers, with set dates and per-person pricing. You share the vehicle and campfire with a small international group. Single supplements apply for private rooms at lodges, or you can opt to share and skip the supplement.

We use 4x4 Toyota Land Cruisers with pop-up roofs for rough northern routes and cross-border safaris, and 8-seater safari vans for classic Kenyan circuits. All vehicles carry a fridge, charging points, and a guaranteed window seat for every guest.
