Akagera Game Lodge is the park’s original accommodation, perched on a hillside with panoramic views over Lake Ihema and the surrounding papyrus swamps. Recently refurbished, the lodge combines its historic character with modern comforts.
The 44 rooms are spread across hillside blocks, each with en-suite bathrooms and balconies facing the lake. The lodge features a restaurant, bar, large swimming pool, and conference facilities. Hippos and crocodiles are visible in the lake below.
Game drives depart from the lodge, with excellent chances of seeing elephant herds, lion prides, and the park’s re-introduced rhinos. Boat safaris on Lake Ihema are a highlight, passing through channels lined with papyrus where shoebills and other rare birds may be spotted.
