Chyulu Hills National Park

Chyulu Hills National Park protects a dramatic range of volcanic hills stretching between Amboseli and Tsavo West national parks. These geologically young hills (some lava flows are only 500 years old) create a unique landscape of green, forested peaks rising above surrounding semi-arid plains.

The park is home to Leviathan Cave, one of the world’s longest lava tubes at over 11 kilometres, and the crystal-clear Umani Springs in the Kibwezi Forest at the foot of the hills. The Chyulu aquifer, which filters rainfall through volcanic rock, feeds the famous Mzima Springs in nearby Tsavo West.

Wildlife includes elephants, buffalo, leopards, and various antelope species. The birdlife is rich, with forest species mixing with savannah species due to the transitional habitat. The views of Mount Kilimanjaro from the ridgeline are considered among the best in Kenya.

The park sees very few visitors, offering a genuine wilderness experience. Ol Donyo Lodge, one of East Africa’s most exclusive properties, is perched on the hills with infinity pools overlooking Kilimanjaro.
