Hell’s Gate National Park is one of Kenya’s most unique wildlife reserves. Unlike most parks, visitors are permitted to walk and cycle through Hell’s Gate, allowing an intimate and thrilling experience of being on foot among buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and occasionally predators.
The park’s dramatic landscape of towering cliffs, water-sculpted gorges, and volcanic rock columns inspired the setting for Disney’s “The Lion King.” Fischer’s Tower, a 25-metre volcanic plug, and the Central Tower are iconic landmarks, while the Hell’s Gate Gorge offers a spectacular hiking experience through narrow slot canyons with hot springs.
Covering just 68 square kilometres near Lake Naivasha, the park sits on one of Kenya’s most active geothermal areas. The Olkaria Geothermal Station on the park’s edge harnesses this underground heat for electricity generation, and visitors can bathe in naturally heated hot springs.
Rock climbing on the park’s cliff faces is increasingly popular, and the park offers excellent mountain biking trails through the valley floor. The combination of adventure activities and wildlife viewing makes Hell’s Gate unlike any other park in Kenya.
