Lake Tana and Bahir Dar

Lake Tana is Ethiopia’s largest lake and the source of the Blue Nile. The lake and its surroundings offer a blend of natural beauty and deep historical significance. Scattered across the lake are 37 islands, many of which harbour centuries-old monasteries with extraordinary religious paintings and manuscripts.

The monasteries of Ura Kidane Mihret and Azwa Maryam feature some of the finest examples of Ethiopian Orthodox religious art, with vivid murals depicting biblical scenes. Many monasteries still house ancient crowns, crosses, and illustrated manuscripts.

Nearby, the Blue Nile Falls (Tis Abay — “smoking water”) plunge 45 metres into a gorge, creating a magnificent spectacle. The lakeside town of Bahir Dar, with its palm-lined boulevards, is one of Ethiopia’s most pleasant cities and serves as the base for exploring the region.
