Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is a truly unique wildlife reserve — the only national park in the world situated within a capital city. Just 7 kilometres from Nairobi’s central business district, visitors can watch lions, rhinos, and giraffes with the city’s skyscrapers shimmering in the background.

Established in 1946, this 117-square-kilometre park protects a remarkable range of wildlife considering its urban setting. It is one of Kenya’s most successful rhino sanctuaries, with both black and white rhinos thriving here. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, buffalos, zebras, and over 400 bird species call the park home.

The park’s southern boundary is open, allowing wildlife to migrate between the park and the adjoining Kitengela plains during the wet season. The Athi River flows through the park, creating lush riverine habitats, while the Ivory Burning Site monument commemorates Kenya’s stand against poaching.

Nairobi National Park is perfect for visitors with limited time in Kenya or those wanting a quick safari experience during a Nairobi layover. Morning game drives are particularly rewarding, with cooler temperatures and more active wildlife.
