Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan surrounded by towering red sand dunes in the Namib-Naukluft National Park. The dunes here are among the highest in the world, with Big Daddy reaching approximately 325 metres, and their deep red-orange colour (caused by iron oxide) makes them one of the most photographed landscapes in Africa.

Deadvlei, a neighbouring white clay pan studded with 900-year-old dead camelthorn trees against a backdrop of rust-coloured dunes, is perhaps Namibia’s single most iconic image. The contrast of white pan, black trees, orange dunes, and blue sky creates an almost surreal composition.

Visitors typically arrive for sunrise when the low light paints the dunes in vivid colours. Climbing Dune 45 or Big Daddy provides spectacular panoramic views. The area is accessible from the gateway town of Sesriem, where the Sesriem Canyon offers an additional geological attraction.
