Lake Nakuru National Park, nestled in the Great Rift Valley, is one of Kenya’s most treasured national parks. The park surrounds the alkaline Lake Nakuru, which was once world-famous for hosting up to two million flamingos — creating a spectacular pink fringe along its shores.
While flamingo numbers fluctuate with water levels, the park has become one of Kenya’s most important rhino sanctuaries. Both black and white rhinos are well-protected here behind an electric fence, making it one of the best places in East Africa to see these endangered species up close. The park also supports a healthy population of Rothschild’s giraffe, another endangered species.
Covering 188 square kilometres of lake, woodland, bushland, and grassland, the park supports a diverse ecosystem. Lions, leopards, waterbuck, baboons, and pythons are frequently spotted. The surrounding euphorbia forest adds a unique landscape element, with candelabra trees framing views of the lake.
Lake Nakuru is just a two-hour drive from Nairobi, making it perfect for a day trip or weekend safari. The park offers excellent game-viewing circuits, a scenic viewpoint at Baboon Cliff, and opportunities for bird watching with over 450 species recorded.
