Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is a stunning freshwater lake in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, just 90 kilometres northwest of Nairobi. At 1,884 metres elevation, the lake is surrounded by a fringe of papyrus swamp and acacia woodland that supports remarkable wildlife diversity.

The lake is a prime destination for boat trips, where visitors can glide past pods of hippos, fish eagles, and a staggering variety of waterbirds — over 400 species have been recorded. Crescent Island, a private game sanctuary within the lake, offers guided walking safaris among giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and waterbuck in a predator-free environment.

Lake Naivasha also serves as a base for exploring nearby attractions including Hell’s Gate National Park, Mount Longonot, and the Crater Lake Game Sanctuary. The area is famous for its flower farms, producing a significant portion of Europe’s cut flower supply.

Accommodation around the lake ranges from luxury resorts to budget campsites, with several properties offering lakeside dining and sundowner experiences. The Elsamere Conservation Centre, former home of Joy Adamson of Born Free fame, is a popular cultural stop.
