Ruma National Park

Ruma National Park, located in the Lambwe Valley near Lake Victoria, is a small but significant reserve covering 120 square kilometres of grassland and woodland. It is the only park in Kenya where the rare and majestic roan antelope can be found, making it a must-visit for serious wildlife enthusiasts.

Beyond the roan antelope, Ruma supports populations of Rothschild’s giraffe, Jackson’s hartebeest, oribi, and leopard. The park’s grasslands and acacia woodland create a beautiful landscape, particularly during the green season when the valley comes alive with wildflowers and birdlife — over 400 species have been recorded.

Ruma’s remote location means very few tourists visit, offering a genuinely off-the-beaten-path experience. The park can be combined with visits to Lake Victoria, the Rusinga Island fossil sites, and the vibrant Luo fishing communities of Homa Bay.

The park is managed by KWS and offers basic camping facilities. Self-drive is the primary way to explore, though guided walks can be arranged with park rangers.
